Address

The Mall, Waterford X91 HE9R

The Theatre Royal is Ireland’s oldest continually operating theatre, originally opened in 1785. It is a "theatre within a theatre"—a stunning Victorian horseshoe-shaped auditorium hidden inside a grand Georgian building. Located in the historic Viking Triangle of Waterford City, it has a seating capacity of 432 spread across three levels: the Stalls, the Dress Circle, and the Upper Circle. Known as "The People's Theatre," it hosts a diverse year-round programme of national and international drama, music, comedy, and opera, and is famous for its iconic Waterford Crystal chandelier hanging in the centre of the auditorium.

Accessibility

The Theatre Royal is committed to being an inclusive venue: Wheelchair Access: The ground floor (Stalls) is fully accessible from the main foyer. There are 4 dedicated wheelchair spaces in the auditorium: 3 in Row A (Stalls) and 1 in Row R (Balcony). Elevator: A lift in the foyer provides access to the first-floor gallery and balcony seating. Toilets: Accessible toilet facilities are available on-site. Hearing Support: The venue is equipped with a hearing loop system at the Box Office. Patrons are encouraged to contact the Box Office in advance to ensure their seating is optimized for any assistive listening requirements. Booking: The theatre requests that patrons with specific accessibility needs contact the Box Office directly (+353 51 874 402) so they can provide the best possible service.

Car Parking

The Theatre Royal does not have its own private car park, but there are several options within a short walking distance: Bolton Street Car Park: Located just a 2-minute walk away (behind the House of Waterford Crystal). It offers ample parking with no daily time limit (charges apply during certain hours). On-Street Parking: There are a limited number of spaces on The Mall directly outside the theatre, though these fill up quickly. Accessible Parking: There are two designated disabled public parking spaces on The Mall directly in front of the venue.

Café & Bar

The Vestibule: This is the theatre’s elegant 18th-century entrance foyer, which serves as a hospitality space for registration and breaks during events. Theatre Bar: There is an internal bar available for patrons to purchase drinks before performances and during intervals. Nearby Dining: Because the theatre is located in the heart of the "Viking Triangle," it is surrounded by many of Waterford's top restaurants and pubs, such as The Reg, Momo, and the House of Waterford Café, all within a 1-minute walk.
