Opened in 2002, the Mermaid County Wicklow Arts Centre is the premier cultural resource for North Wicklow. The building is a bright, modern space housing a 242-seat intimate auditorium that serves as a theatre, concert hall, and cinema (equipped with state-of-the-art digital projection and surround sound). It also features a spacious 165sq meter gallery that hosts a rotating programme of visual arts exhibitions. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and high-quality programming, the Mermaid is a central hub for the Bray Jazz Festival and serves as a vital platform for both local Wicklow artists and major national touring productions.

Accessibility

Mermaid Arts Centre is a fully accessible, purpose-built venue:

  • Physical Access: The building is easily accessed from Main Street via a ramp and has an automated front door. A lift from the café provides access to the gallery and multi-purpose spaces on the upper floors.

  • Seating: The auditorium can accommodate up to 14 wheelchair spaces, all located in the front row. These cannot be booked online; patrons must contact the Box Office directly (+353 1 272 4030).

  • Hearing Support: A Loop System is installed in the auditorium for patrons with hearing impairments.

  • Neurodiversity & Sensory Support: The venue provides "Sensory Boxes" at the Box Office (containing noise-cancelling headphones and toys) and occasionally hosts relaxed performances with reduced sound and lighting levels.

  • Assistance Animals: Guide and hearing dogs are welcome; staff can provide aisle seats with extra space for the animal upon request.

Car Parking

Mermaid Arts Centre offers convenient parking, particularly for evening visitors:

  • Evening & Weekend Parking: Free underground parking is available directly behind the Civic Offices building for the duration of evening and weekend shows.

  • Daytime Parking: The underground car park is generally closed to the public during weekdays. During these hours, visitors must use the Pay & Display private car park immediately on the left when turning in off Main Street.

  • Accessible Parking: There are designated disabled parking spaces located behind the Bray Municipal District building.

  • Alternative Options: Other nearby Pay & Display locations include Killarney Road, Herbert Road, and the Q-Park at Bray Primary Healthcare Centre.

Café & Bar

The venue features an award-winning on-site café and bar service:

  • Críoch Café: A relatively new addition (opened 2025/2026), this café is led by Chef Tadgh Byrne and recently won "Best Newcomer" at the Irish Restaurant Awards. It specializes in sustainable, locally sourced Wicklow produce. It is open for breakfast and lunch (typically from 8:00 am).

  • Theatre Bar: A full bar service is available in the foyer on performance evenings, opening for pre-show drinks and during intervals.

  • Special Events: The café also hosts unique culinary experiences, such as "Music & Brunch" fine-dining events.

  • Nearby Dining: Being in the heart of Bray, the centre is surrounded by restaurants such as Koi Japanese, Pink Salt, and McGettigan’s, all within a 2-minute walk.
