Is Ballet a Sport? What the Definitions Say

Ballet meets the broad definition of sport used across Europe, and professional dancers train as hard as many athletes. Most people still call it an art form, because it's performed for an audience and there's no winner. The answer you get depends on the definition you use.

How sport is defined

The Council of Europe's European Sports Charter defines sport as any form of physical activity, casual or organised, that aims to improve fitness and mental well-being, build social relationships or achieve results in competition (European Sports Charter). Ballet meets that easily.

Narrower definitions add competition and rules for winning. Ballet performance has neither, though ballet competitions exist, such as the Prix de Lausanne for young dancers. Dance competitions are also part of the year for many Irish schools: see our Dance World Cup guide.

Dancers train like athletes

Professional ballet dancers take a full class every working day before rehearsals and performances. Sports scientists describe them as performing athletes. A widely cited review in Sports Medicine found that modern choreography makes fitness as important as skill, and that extra strength and fitness training improved dancers' fitness and reduced injuries without harming their artistry (Koutedakis and Jamurtas 2004).

The same review found that dance training alone gives limited fitness gains. Some professional dancers scored about the same as healthy non-athletes of their age on key fitness measures.

Dance at the Olympics

Breaking made its Olympic debut at Paris 2024, but it won't be at Los Angeles 2028, where the organisers chose other new sports. Artistic swimming, which grew out of water ballet, has been an Olympic sport since 1984: read from water ballet to artistic swimming.

Sport or art?

Both, depending on who's asking. Ballet is an art form judged by audiences and critics, and the people who dance it train with the discipline and physical load of elite athletes. For a child choosing an activity, it offers much of what sport does: fitness, coordination, friends and a reason to turn up every week. Our guide is ballet good for children? looks at the evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Is ballet an Olympic sport?

No. Breaking appeared at Paris 2024 and artistic swimming is an Olympic sport, but ballet has never been an Olympic event.

Are ballet dancers athletes?

Sports scientists often describe them as performing athletes, because of the physical demands of daily training and performance.

Is ballet harder than other sports?

It's a different kind of hard. Ballet asks for strength, flexibility, balance and precision at the same time, and the aim is to make all of it look effortless.
