Musical theatre performers train in ballet because it underpins most stage dance. Jazz, contemporary and theatre choreography build on ballet technique, and dance auditions can include a ballet combination. Ballet also has its own place in musicals, going back to Agnes de Mille's dream ballet in Oklahoma! in 1943.
The dream ballet
In Oklahoma!, de Mille choreographed a ballet to close the first act, in which the heroine Laurey dreams about choosing between Curly and Jud (Rodgers & Hammerstein). It showed that dance could carry the story of a musical. De Mille went on to choreograph Carousel and Brigadoon, and dream ballets became popular on Broadway through the 1940s and 1950s.
What ballet gives a performer

Posture and control. Core strength and alignment help performers stay steady through a demanding number.
Picking up choreography. Ballet class trains you to learn and repeat sequences quickly, a key skill in any audition room.
