About this production
Wanjiru Kamuyu performs her Bessie Award-winning solo An Immigrant's Story at Dance Cork Firkin Crane, Cork, on 15 and 16 October 2026 at 7.30pm.
Kenyan-American choreographer Wanjiru Kamuyu has made her home on three continents. In An Immigrant's Story she asks whether, wherever she settles, she is still seen as an immigrant. The solo uses satire to examine how a new society looks at the "foreigner", and the ideas of place and belonging that run through today's politics.
The piece won Kamuyu a Bessie Award for Outstanding Choreographer. Her company, WKcollective, founded in 2009, makes contemporary dance with artists from several disciplines and cultural backgrounds.
The Cork performances are in the Smurfit Theatre at Firkin Crane, presented by the Regional Dance Network: Uillinn West Cork Arts Centre, Dance Limerick, Tipperary Dance and Dance Cork Firkin Crane.
